Devil Heir: A Stepbrother Romance Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,409 ratings

Something so wrong has no business feeling this good.

I met the devil when I was fourteen years old.

Just a kid himself, he was hellbent on making me miserable.

By fifteen I hated him.

When I was sixteen, I moved as far away as I could.

Since I’ve left, my life has been simple—peaceful and still.

I had no intention of ever returning to Skull Creek.

Until tragedy struck and I was called back.

It’s been two years since I saw my step-brother.

I hoped he had changed.

But the devil is still the same.

He’s arrogant and ruthless.

Rules the town with an iron fist.

Where he walks, crowds part.

Now his blame is set on me, along with his dark orbs of hate.

It’s time to show him I’m not the same girl I was back then.

If he pushes, I’ll push harder.

Where I bend, he will break.

As long as he doesn’t find my weakness, I can survive this.

Even if my weakness has become the devil himself.

Angsty read!!

Angsty read!!
Woah! When I first heard of Devil Heir, I so didn’t expect this book. Man oh man, it was ABSOLUTELY amazing! You want to talk about enemies to lovers – well, this book fits that trope to a T. Blaise and Penny are such a unique set of characters. When two teens are thrown together to make a blended family, there’s bound to be chaos and fights, but what happens in Devil Heir is definitely not the norm for real life. That’s what I love about this book, though. It’s full of drama. One of my favorite things is when you can literally watch a character develop throughout the book. Penny went from being a weaker character, to one that’s strong and has a backbone. She stands up to Blaise – pretty much tells him where to shove it. And then her emotions get in the way and oh man, the steaminess is perfect! I hope that Penny keeps the backbone. The second half of the book was even better. All the secrets and lies are admitted and come to the surface. And lemme tell you… I was SHOCKED, absolutely SHOCKED at who actually was behind the fire that almost wrecked Penny’s life. When Blaise gets his head out of his a--, oh man… it’s kinda the best thing ever. Penny and him just fit together. They both can give it back to each other and their banter is entertaining!Devil Heir is toxic, steamy, angsty, and a must-read!

The FMC character development is absolutely on point! MMC was almost irredeemable but boy the plot twist . Great read!

Wow! This has everything you could possibly want in a bully romance and actually enemies to lovers as well. The stuff that poor Penelope went through for years would break a lesser person but somehow she manages to make herself stronger and returns with a vengeance. Her tormentors have answers she desperately needs and she will found out one way or another. It’s amazing watching the character growth of Penelope and Blaise from the 1st half of the book to the 2nd. I absolutely loved the ending. Rachel Leigh is an amazing author and I will definitely be reading more from her.

Ok I remember reading the first 40 or 45% of this book in the Brutal Boys anthology and wasn’t that excited about it to be honest. I absolutely hated Penelope. I just thought wow she’s so 🤬 pathetic. And Blaise seemed like every other generic bad boy in these bully type NA novels. But my curiosity was way too much for me to look away. I had to see where Rachel Leigh was going with this story and if she planned on redeeming any of her characters.
The first half of this story was like a different story. The beginning is really interesting. I liked the premise of two young teenagers meeting and not seeing eye to eye and how Blaise sets his sights on destroying Penelope just because he hates her mom (rightfully so, that woman is no mother; she’s horrid) and he can. Everyone in their school worships him or are afraid of his wrath. Something I never felt was truly shown from his pov. I wish we did, so we can truly see him at his worst. The first act is just a lot of placing the facts neatly so the reader can she how horrible Penny’s life is. The second act is a doozy. It goes on for way longer than necessary in showing us how spineless Penny really is. It’s so embarrassing 🙈.
So the first act is from when Penny is 14-16. She leaves for Portland to live with her dad after a terrifying almost life ending experience and a very intense intimate encounter with Blaise.
Then in Act II she’s 18 and returning for what she thinks will be her last encounter with her mother’s new family. This is the portion of the story that almost killed it for me, no lie. Penny is beyond stupid to me. Like the writing is on the wall. Always has been, but girl refuses to see it. I’ve seen other reviewers say she’s naïve. That’s not an understatement. Girl lacks all judgment and is delusional to her very core!! It was excruciating for me. I was like no good lord no please this girl dumb. No one liked you please don’t give them a second chance. They don’t deserve it!!! And then we see that Blaise is still the f@ckboi he always was when he casually hooks up with Emery, (every girl’s nightmare bff) Penny’s former bff. Seriously his pov during this portion of the story is just so underwhelming. If you could skip any part it’d be from like 40%-60%.
At the 60% mark is where this story finally gets good. Something you can finally sink your teeth into. To me this is the third act. It’s where Penny has finally seen the light and she wants to serve everyone of her haters straight to hell. I was ready for it. Gosh was I ever. But I don’t get it. It’s so rushed it’s not even funny. Because not only are we dealing with a revenge plan that never really happens but we’re also dealing with Penny and Blaise trying to ignore the elephant in the room that is their intense chemistry that may or may not be something I believe in.
It’s just going 100mph. I think the author was perhaps going for this route, like true love can overcome all obstacles, all the pain and suffering will be forgiven and you can move on. That’s what I think because it seemed like it was a quick way to wrap things up. But I was hoping for something more I guess. I saw potential for more. Like I seriously thought at the 75% mark that there had to be a part two because there’s just so much here, no way this can be over so soon?
Also something that always irks me is that the h had to be virginal. Blaise even says I’m so many words that he’s happy he was the only one, but in the two years they were apart I he definitely already came to some conclusion that he was in love with her he still sleeps with ow, including her ex-bff!!! Oh the hypocrisy. Also he sounds like a damn girl in his POVs. Was that intentional author? If so, I thought ok kinda funny. This big man on campus is fretting about internally lol!!
I actually enjoyed this story despite my ranting and raving. Could be better imo. Like If the story started from the 60% mark and just stretched out and developed more of that plot twist it could have been a five star book for me.

Wow! Devil Heir was a fantastic read! I have never read anything from Rachel, but that is about to change. This story was a gritty and dark high school bully romance. I devoured this book in one day.

"Why do I feel like I'm under some sort of spell? Being near him, in this house, it's mind-altering. I hate Blaise. So why do I melt at his feet?"

Penelope moved to Skull Creek with her mother when she married Richard Hale, her new stepfather. Along with a new stepfather, she also gains a new stepbrother, Blaise, the devil himself, and makes it his mission to ruin her life and torment her. She attends Skull Creek Academy, where Blaise makes her life miserable with his crew. Something tragic happens at the devil's night party that changes Blaise and Penny's life forever, causing Penny to flee and run to Portland to live with her dad.

"Oh, God," I cry out. My arousal drips into the palm of his hand.

Richard, her stepfather, dies, bringing Penny back to Skull creek. This time, she is back for revenge and unanswered questions and exploring Blaise's thrilling intense chemistry.

"Okay. Maybe someday we'll stop pretending that there's nothing between us and show the world we're unbreakable."

This book takes you on one an emotional ride. Devil Heir is an enemies-to-lovers book with a lot of angst and a plot twist that you don't see coming. I recommend this book to anyone who loves high school bully romances.

I enjoyed this classic bully romance. I love how we got snippets of their past all the way to the present. I loved witnessing Penelope’s growth in strength from scared and avoiding to putting herself out there abs standing up for herself. The pull these two experienced towards each other but fought was everything and I loved getting to witness the realization of feelings. One of my issues was that I need a little bit more of that in between state before full blown I love you. All in all I really enjoyed this bully read. It was a pretty quick read for me but super entertaining.

I really wanted to like this one but I couldn’t stand the characters. I know it’s a bully romance so I wasn’t expecting hearts and flowers or anything like that, but come on. Blaise was just so awful that I couldn’t get past everything he did to the heroine. I should have stopped as soon as he got an attempted bj from Penelope’s so called best friend Emery. And Penelope….. what is she? A masochist? She just kept coming back for more. Too much of a doormat for my taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5/5 what did I just read
Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2022
There are so many players and plot twists I felt I read three books in one. Overall a good read but just wished it was either a little longer to see more of Blaise and Penelope together or cut out some of the beginning. It’s definitely a bully romance with lots of hate towards poor Penelope and it drive me a little crazy how much of a punching bag she was to everyone in her life. Don’t worry it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but I was nervous the author had me going for a second. Would still recommend and I’m intrigued for the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Bully Romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2022
I enjoyed this book but I feel like it could have been so much better. Certain things about the characters really annoyed me. For instance the main lead female character was so indecisive & gullible that it’s a wonder she didn’t get whiplash. I’m assuming the author meant to write her as this shy, bullied, forgiving character but she came off as weak and silly. Her character just totally overlooked the awful things her enemies were doing to her & was like “ah well!” I mean it was pathetic.

And don’t get me started on Blaise, I mean I get the way his character was supposed to come off, but it just didn’t work.

However, I felt like the premise of the story was good. Just a few tweaks are needed IMO, to improve it. Lots of people rate this 5 stars but for me it was more a 3.5. But since I can’t choose that, it’s a 4 star read. It entertained me but I definitely found it lacking in some areas.
